Some key elements within the National Democratic Congress have put the Electoral Commission (EC) under the spotlight and registered their doubt, over the neutrality of the body to conduct the 2020 general elections.
Former President Mahama has joined the fray but has been quickly warned by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party to stop attacking the EC by creating an impression, it will be one-sided during the 2020 elections.
Mr. Bernard Antwi-Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi asserted that the greater works of President Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia on Ghana’s economy, were enough to make electorates retain the New Patriotic Party in 2020 and beyond.
Developments such as the ongoing construction of a small-town water system at Yapei and the introduction and adoption of comprehensive Mobile Money Interoperability (MMI) in Ghana to solve the problem of ensuring basic financial inclusion, according to Chairman Wontumi, were some of the few things that would make voters from rural areas prefer the NPP in 2020.
In an interview on Citi News, former President Mahama stated that the EC is not a secret society and all processes they are engaged in should be opened up to all political parties.”
“When the EC starts behaving like the representatives of political parties are a nuisance [to the commission]… then this affects the trust and confidence the people have in the EC [which is supposed to be] a neutral arbiter,” the former President added.
But Chairman Wontumi noted that the statements by former President Mahama about the EC were “unfounded and reckless”.
He stated that “even if former President Mahama’s wife Lordina is made Chairperson of the EC, he would lose miserably. He shouldn’t think for once that he has a greater chance to win the 2020 elections. He knows the grounds aren’t good for him so he is deliberately painting the EC black. This approach won’t work for him”.
