Africa records more than 1,002 coronavirus deaths in the last 24 hours

More than 1,002 deaths associated with covid-19 have been registered in Africa in the last 24 hours, which counts a further 48,413 cases, for a total of 6,906,055 infections, according to the most recent official data on the pandemic on the continent.

According to the latest bulletin from the African Union Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the number of deaths associated with covid-19 is now 174,838.

The continent registers 6,047,230 recovered patients, of which 42,835 did in the last 24 hours.

On this continent, southern Africa remains the most affected region, with 3,323,414 infected and 91,436 deaths associated with covid-19. South Africa alone has 2,497,655 infected and 73,873 deaths.

North Africa, which succeeds Southern Africa in covid-19 numbers, has 2,019,221 cases and 55,938 deaths associated with the disease.

East Africa has 813,081 infected and 17,204 and the West African region has 543,035 infections and 7,096 deaths.

Central Africa is the region of the continent with the fewest cases of infection and deaths: 207,304 cases and 3,164 deaths.

Tunisia, the second African country with the most fatalities after South Africa, registers 20,550 deaths and 599,938 cases, followed by Egypt, with 16,557 deaths and 284,523 infected, and Morocco, which accounts for the second-highest number of infections in the entire continent, 665,325 cases, but fewer deaths than the two previous countries, with 10,087 deaths associated with the disease.

Among the most affected countries are Ethiopia, with 4,406 deaths and 282,498 infections, and Algeria, with 4,441 deaths and 178,013 infected.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique registers 1,538 deaths and 129,036 cases of infection accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic, and Angola accounts for 1,032 deaths associated with the disease and 43,269 accumulated infected people.

Cape Verde registers 298 deaths associated with the disease and 33,941 infections, Equatorial Guinea 123 deaths and 8,928 cases, Guinea-Bissau registers 79 deaths and 4,679 infected, and São Tomé and Príncipe 37 deaths and 2,463 infections.

The first covid-19 case in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14, 2020, and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to report cases of infection, on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic has killed at least 4,247,424 worldwide, among more than 200.1 million cases of new coronavirus infection, since the WHO detected the disease in China in late December 2019, according to the balance of the AFP based on official data.

The respiratory disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, detected at the end of 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China, and currently with variants identified in countries such as the United Kingdom, India, South Africa, Brazil, and Peru.
