Africa records over 914 coronavirus related deaths and over 40,000 cases in 24 hours

Africa has today, Friday, August 20 registered 40,534 more cases of infection by the new coronavirus, bringing the total to 7,429318, which resulted in 914 more deaths, bringing the death toll to 187,281, according to the most recent official data.

According to a bulletin from the African Union Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) issued this morning, southern Africa remains the most affected region, with 3,545,897 infected and 98,148 deaths associated with covid-19.

In South Africa alone, the country most affected by the pandemic on the African continent accounts for 2,652,652 infected and 78,694 deaths.

North Africa, which succeeds Southern Africa in the covid-19 numbers, reached 2,233,704 cases and 60,079 deaths associated with the disease.

East Africa has 871,329 infections and 18,142 deaths and the West Africa region has 575,115 infections and 7,737 deaths.

Central Africa is the region of the continent with the fewest cases of infection and deaths: 213,273 cases and 3,175 deaths.

Tunisia, the second African country with more fatalities after South Africa, registers 22,304 deaths and 632,328 cases, followed by Egypt, with 16,647 deaths and 285,831 infected, and Morocco, which accounts for the second-highest number of infections in the entire continent, 791,559 cases, but fewer deaths than the two previous countries, with 11,472 deaths associated with the disease.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique registers 1,773 deaths and 141,383 cases of infection accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic, and Angola accounts for 1,133 deaths associated with the disease and 45,325 accumulated infections.

Cape Verde registers 300 deaths associated with the disease and 34,598 infections, Equatorial Guinea maintains 123 deaths and 9,010 cases, Guinea-Bissau has 96 deaths and 5,366 infected and São Tomé and Príncipe 37 deaths and 2,502 infections.

The first covid-19 case in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14, 2020, and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to report cases of infection, on February 28.
