Burkina Faso's junta leader, Ibrahim Traore, has announced plans to withdraw mining permits from some foreign companies and focus on producing more gold domestically.
He did not specify which companies would be affected.
Speaking during a radio address to mark two years since his rise to power, Traore questioned the role of multinationals in the country’s gold mining sector.
Gold is Burkina Faso’s primary export, and the move could impact companies like Endeavour Mining, West African Resources, and Russia's Nordgold.
The announcement comes as Burkina Faso continues to face growing insecurity from groups linked to Al Qaeda and Islamic State.
