Commonwealth heads of government are set to challenge the UK by discussing reparatory justice for the transatlantic slave trade at their upcoming summit in Samoa, despite opposition from the UK.

Diplomats are working on a draft communique to begin a "meaningful conversation" about reparations, which could include financial compensation, debt relief, and other measures.

Caribbean leaders are pushing for the UK to acknowledge the lasting effects of slavery and address it with integrity.

Although the UK denies reparations are on the agenda, the issue is expected to be a key focus at future summits.
