Ethiopia president replaced after falling out with PM

Ethiopia's parliament has appointed Taye Astike Selassie as the new president, replacing Sahle-Work Zewde, the country's first female head of state.

Selassie, previously the foreign minister, takes on a largely ceremonial role while real power lies with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

Sahle-Work, who hinted at her dissatisfaction with her term, made calls for peace but faced criticism for not addressing gender-based violence during the Tigray conflict.

With her departure, Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu Hassan remains Africa's only female head of state.
