Rwandan President Paul Kagame is set to extend his 24-year rule by another five years after a landslide victory in the recent election.
With about 79% of ballots counted, Kagame has secured 99.15% of the vote. His two opponents, Frank Habineza and Philippe Mpayimana, received 0.53% and 0.32%, respectively.
Kagame faced no significant opposition as leading figures were banned from running. Thanking Rwandans for their trust, Kagame emphasized the importance of this support.
The electoral commission reported a 98% voter turnout among the 9.5 million eligible voters. Kagame has been Rwanda's de-facto leader since 1994 and president since 2000.
