Mozambican president asks Muslims for 'sacrifices' to stop pandemic

The Mozambican President today, July 20, 2021 asked for "sacrifices" from the Muslim community so that the country can "come out victorious" in the fight against the new coronavirus, in a message alluding to the celebration of the feast of sacrifice or Eid al-Adha.

"Every citizen, faithful to Islam, is asked to, as Ibrahim did in the past, accept today the call to, once again, allow sacrifices so that we can come out victorious in the prevention of covid-19, observing the measures prevention advocated in the Presidential Decree," said Filipe Nyusi, in a note sent to the media by the Presidency on the occasion of the celebration of Eid al-Adha.

The head of state wished the Muslim community a happy holiday, calling on Allah to eradicate "this evil of covid-19 which challenges everyone."

The Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), the ruling party, also sent a message to the Muslim community, highlighting its contribution to the victims of armed attacks in the centre and north of the country.

"Frelimo values ​​the very rich contribution of the Muslim community that contributes to the economic, social and moral growth of the Mozambican homeland," highlighted in a note sent today to the media.

Mozambique, which is experiencing the third wave of coronavirus, registers an increase in the number of cases, deaths and hospitalizations, after a reduction registered between March and May.

Since the announcement of the first case in March last year, Mozambique has had a total of 1,138 deaths due to covid-19 and 100,785 infections, 76% of which have recovered, according to the latest updates.
