Mozambique early vote counting under way after peaceful election

Vote counting has started in Mozambique after a peaceful national election, with expectations that the ruling Frelimo party will maintain its 49-year control.

Frelimo candidate Daniel Chapo is the likely winner, despite allegations of past election rigging.

Initial results are expected by Saturday, while official outcomes will take about two weeks.

Chapo, who is new to national politics, faces competition from independent candidate Venancio Mondlane, who appeals to younger voters, along with Ossufo Momade and Lutero Simango.

The new president will inherit challenges, including an ongoing Islamist insurgency.
