Russia's embassy in Sudan is investigating reports that a Russian cargo plane was shot down in Darfur amid the ongoing civil war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The Ilyushin Il-76 was reportedly delivering supplies to El-Fasher. The RSF claimed responsibility for downing a military plane, initially misidentified as Egyptian.
The conflict, which began in April 2023, has caused severe humanitarian crises, with estimates of 150,000 deaths and over 10 million displaced.
Recent fighting has escalated around Khartoum, resulting in civilian casualties from military airstrikes.
