Patricia Kaliati, Secretary-General of Malawi's opposition UTM party, faces charges of allegedly plotting to assassinate President Lazarus Chakwera.
Arrested last week, Kaliati appeared in court on Monday in Lilongwe, where her lawyer defended her innocence.
Few details of the alleged plot were disclosed, prompting opposition claims that the charges are politically motivated. Supporters of Kaliati rallied outside the court, chanting anti-government slogans.
The court granted her bail while the investigation proceeds.
Kaliati, once a teacher, is known for her outspoken nature and recently announced her candidacy to lead the UTM following the death of former party leader Saulos Chilima.
