South Africa has temporarily closed the Lebombo border with Mozambique amid violent protests following Mozambique's disputed presidential election.

Protests erupted after ruling party candidate Daniel Chapo was declared the winner with over 71% of the vote, a result contested by opposition leader Venâncio Mondlane.

Clashes in Mozambique have led to at least 18 deaths, vehicle torching, and the burning of an immigration office near the border.

Seven Mozambican officials have sought refuge in South Africa.

South Africa’s Border Management Authority has engaged police and military to prevent spillover violence, urging travelers to use alternative routes.
