South African former finance minister Tito Mboweni dies at 65

Tito Mboweni, South Africa's former finance and labour minister and first Black central bank governor, has died at 65 after a brief illness, as announced by the presidency.

An anti-apartheid activist, Mboweni served as the country's first labour minister from 1994 to 1999 under Nelson Mandela.

He later governed the South African Reserve Bank for a decade and was finance minister from 2018 to 2021.

The African National Congress praised his significant contributions to South Africa's democratic future and labour rights.

President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed shock at his passing, recognizing Mboweni as a vital leader and innovator.
