Step-son of Malawi's ex-leader acquitted over migrant deaths

Tadikira Mafubza, the stepson of Malawi's former President Peter Mutharika, has been acquitted of human trafficking and aggravated manslaughter charges.

He and seven others were arrested in November 2022 in connection with the deaths of 29 Ethiopian immigrants found in a mass grave.

After a 19-month trial, the court found insufficient evidence to link them to the crimes.

The acquittal came as a surprise to some, but Mafubza's lawyer was pleased with the outcome.
