A new study reveals that the death toll from Sudan's civil war is far higher than previously reported, with over 61,000 deaths in Khartoum state alone.

The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine's report states that 26,000 died directly from violence, while preventable diseases and starvation were the leading causes of death.

The UN had previously reported around 20,000 deaths.

The conflict, particularly in Darfur, has led to a humanitarian crisis, with many at risk of famine.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International claims French military technology is being used by Sudanese militias, violating a UN arms embargo, and calls for stronger action to stop arms supplies to the warring factions.
