Tanzanian police arrested three opposition leaders, including CHADEMA Chairman Freeman Mbowe and his deputy Tundu Lissu, to prevent protests against alleged killings and abductions of government critics.
The leaders were detained in Dar es Salaam, alongside party members, staff, and journalists covering the event.
Although the journalists were later released, Mbowe and Lissu were briefly held before being granted bail.
Rights activists claim President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s government is cracking down on opponents ahead of upcoming elections.
Earlier this month, another CHADEMA member was found dead under suspicious circumstances.
