GOAL reveal the continent’s top scorer in each of Europe’s biggest leagues

Mohamed Salah

Overtaking Didier Drogba as the all-time top African scorer in the Premier League earlier this season, Salah currently has 114 Premier League goals, putting him 21st in the overall standings.

After initially struggling to make his mark at Chelsea, the forward has taken his game to new heights at Anfield, where his goals have secured a Premier League title and a Champions League winner’s medal.

Currently with 17 goals this season—and at the top of his game—just how far can Salah climb in the all-time Prem scoring charts before he eventually takes his leave of Liverpool.

Samuel Eto’o

The four-time African Footballer of the Year was overlooked by Real Madrid as a youngster, but enjoyed immense success at Barcelona in La Liga after cutting his teeth with Real Mallorca.

He won two Champions Leagues with Barca, as well as three Spanish titles, winning the Liga Golden Boot in the 2005-06 season.

The Cameroon great ended his time in La Liga with 162 goals—putting him 17th in the all-time Liga goalscoring charts, ahead of the likes of Ferenc Puskas and Laszlo Kubala.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

The Barcelona new boy has already made his mark in the Spanish top flight, having scored a hat-trick on his full La Liga bow against Valencia at the weekend.

He’s been a consistent goal threat whenever he’s played, and is the only player this century to have scored a hat-trick in four of Europe’s major leagues, having previously bagged triples for Arsenal, Saint-Etienne and Borussia Dortmund.

While Auba was a Golden Boot winner in the Premier League and the Bundesliga, it was in Germany where he arguably left a bigger mark, and—with 98 goals—is still the all-time top African scorer in the German top flight.

George Weah

As well as an impressive haul in French football, Weah became the all-time top African scorer in Serie A during his time with AC Milan.

He scored 46 goals for the Rossoneri, winning the Serie A on two occasions, but missed out on clinching the Champions League during his time in Italy.

A three-time African Footballer of the Year, he was the UCL top scorer in the 1994-95 season.

Matthew Amoah

Just inside the top 40 scorers in Eredivisie history, Ghana’s Amoah scored 117 goals for four separate clubs in the Dutch top flight.

His biggest contribution came with Vitesse Arnhem, but the speedster also represented Fortuna Sittard, NAC Breda, Heracles Almelo and SC Heerenveen.

A brief move to Borussia Dortmund in 2006 didn’t work out, but Amoah was part of the Ghana squad that reached the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup.

Hassan Akesbi

A little-known African great, Morocco’s Akesbi was named in Caf’s Greatest 200 players, although his legacy isn’t particularly celebrated beyond North Africa.

The striker is the eleventh all-time top scorer in Ligue 1 history — an outstanding achievement considering some of the elite scorers who have featured in the French top flight—having netted 173 goals across eight years in the late 50s and early 60s.

His biggest haul came with Nimes, for whom he bagged 119 and reached two French Cup finals.
