Jihadist groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State in the Sahel are expanding their control and threatening major cities.

In a brazen September 17 attack, militants stormed Mali's capital, Bamako, killing dozens and destroying the presidential jet.

This underscores the region's instability, as conflicts have displaced millions and spurred migration toward Europe.

Since 2021, jihadist violence in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger has surged, with Burkina Faso becoming a hotspot.

Despite military efforts, these groups continue to gain ground, prompting concerns that the Sahel may become a base for global terrorism.
