Drug-Resistant pathogens threaten food security for 2 billion, projected to cost $159bn in annual healthcare by 2050

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) could threaten over two billion people's food supply and raise healthcare costs by $159 billion annually by 2050, causing global GDP losses of up to $1.7 trillion.

The EcoAMR series, a global analysis, estimates 39 million deaths by 2050, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. AMR could cause significant production losses in livestock and healthcare burdens.

Urgent investment in AMR solutions, including reducing antibiotic use in livestock, new drug development, and sanitation improvements, could save millions of lives and boost the global economy by $960 billion annually, yielding a $28 return for every $1 invested.
