The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) is reinforcing consumer safety by tightening mattress manufacturing regulations.
It mandates the use of polyurethane foam, as per the GS 1211:2019 standard, to replace harmful materials like polystyrene, which pose health risks such as respiratory issues, skin irritation, and fire hazards. Polystyrene also emits toxic gases, including styrene, a suspected carcinogen.
To ensure compliance, the GSA will conduct regular inspections and audits, with certified mattresses bearing the GSA's quality mark. This initiative aims to promote accountability in the industry, prioritize consumer safety, and improve product quality in the Ghanaian market.
The GSA's efforts are expected to encourage sustainable practices and enhance Ghana's global manufacturing reputation.
