Galamsey is a major threat to Ghana’s economy and environment – Prof. Oteng-Yeboah

Professor Alfred Oteng Yeboah, Environment and Science Lead at the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, has raised serious concerns about the economic impact of illegal mining, or galamsey, on Ghana.

In an interview on Point of View on Channel One TV, he emphasized the destruction of agriculture, forest reserves, and water resources caused by unregulated mining activities.

He noted that while many depend on galamsey for their livelihoods, its environmental damage is significant.

Professor Oteng Yeboah urged public awareness campaigns and called for galamsey to be declared a national emergency.
