John Jinapor, Ranking Member on Parliament’s Energy Committee, has warned that Ghana’s energy crisis is worsening, with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) already implementing load shedding due to growing debts owed to Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
He cautioned that if unresolved, ECG might shed over 700 megawatts of power, significantly disrupting the nation's electricity supply.
Three IPPs are set to shut down next week over $259 million in unpaid debts, adding to the closure of Sunon-Asogli. The Chamber of Independent Power Producers has urged immediate government action to prevent further outages.
Meanwhile, Nana Amoasi, Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security, criticized the government for importing power from Côte d’Ivoire instead of addressing the crisis by engaging and incentivizing local power producers.
