Shipowners call for the introduction of terminal handling charges

The Shipowners and Agents Association of Ghana (SOAAG) has refuted claims that its members overcharge shippers at the ports, stating that all fees are tied to specific services and are globally applicable.

SOAAG emphasized that charges are agreed upon through contracts with shippers and proposed the reintroduction of terminal handling charges (THCs) for transparency.

Executive member Adam Imoru Ayarna explained that additional surcharges are necessary to cover costs beyond basic freight. Executive Secretary Perpetua Osei-Bonsu urged stakeholders not to blame shipping lines alone for high port costs and emphasized SOAAG's commitment to Ghana's shipping sector growth.
