Tensions rose between the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders (GIFF) and Hapag Lloyd Ghana Limited’s Country Manager, Robert Oram after he declined to accept a petition in the presence of media during a protest in Tema.
GIFF members picketed at several shipping lines, including Hapag Lloyd and Arkas Ghana Limited, to protest high port charges they deemed exploitative.
Following a prior demonstration on September 24, GIFF issued a 14-day ultimatum, and, dissatisfied with the responses, renewed their demands.
Although Oram later met with the protesters, he refused to engage due to the media’s presence.
GIFF’s President, Stephen Adjokatcher, emphasized their continued advocacy for fairer port conditions and announced they would monitor the Ghana Shippers Authority’s operations under its new law.
