A Togolese national, Shaibu Yaw, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison with hard labor for illegal mining in Akyem Mouso, Eastern Region.
Shaibu was convicted after pleading guilty to conspiracy and mining without a license. He was also fined 20,000 penalty units.
Despite pleading for deportation to Togo, the court, led by Judge Abigail Animah Asare, imposed a firm sentence due to the environmental harm caused by illegal mining.
Additionally, five others arrested for similar offenses were granted bail, with their cases adjourned to November 4, 2024.
