Cape Coast, Dec. 23, GNA - Obafemi Awolowo University of Nigeria won the championship trophies in both the men and women 2nd West Africa University Games Handball championship tournament which ended at the University of Cape Coast.
They beat Bayero University of Nigeria 21-20 to lift the gold medal and trophy in their keenly contested match.
University of Kano, Nigeria took the silver and trophy while University of Buoke, Cote D'Ivoire came third with the bronze medal. Obiasba Emmanuel won the gold king trophy after he scored 32 goals while the Fair Play Cup went to UCC with the Most Valuable Player award going to Kelvin Kuma of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU). In the women's division, OAU again came first and took the gold medal and trophy followed by University of Nigeria, Nsuka at the second position to take the silver medal and trophy while University of Ghana came third to be awarded the bronze medal.
Mojisola Adekoya of OAU won the goal king with 24 goals. Abojede Obafunwa was adjudged the Most Valuable Player while the Fair Play trophy went to the University of Ghana.
In the volleyball, (men) Bayero University came first with the gold medal and trophy, University of Lagos came second to take the silver and trophy, while University of Ghana came third with the bronze medal. Mathew Onoja of University of Kano was adjudged the Most Valuable Player, while the Fair Play trophy went to University of Cape Coast. In the women's volleyball division, University of Lagos, Nigeria, came first to take the gold and trophy, University of Ghana came second to be awarded with the silver medal and trophy while University of Cape Coast came third to take the bronze medal.
IBE Chimdiya of University of Lagos was adjudged the Most Valuable Player while the Fair Play trophy went to University for Development Studies, Tamale.
Professor Lasun Emiola, President of West Africa University Games (WAUG) congratulated the sportsmen for exhibiting good sportsmanship during the tournament.
