The two-day Quality Healthcare Forum 2013 organized by GhanaWeb ended on Thursday with participants satisfied at the turn of events.
The over 200 participants, who represented a cross-section of the Ghanaian population during the period, were engaged deeply in discussions on healthcare problems, leadership, patient rights, patient safety and necessary skillset needed to offer quality healthcare.
Many were from the healthcare sector while others from educational institutions. They expressed delight at the opportunity given them to express their concerns towards the healthcare problems the country face and to offer practical solutions.
Khadija Nuhu-Umar, a nursing student from the King of Kings Training College in Accra, said she has learnt a lot from the Forum which would help guide her in the profession she is pursuing as a nurse.
She pointed out to the topic on the patient-nurse relationship which would elevate her to be more professional in her field. She was appreciative of the initiative by GhanaWeb.
Patrick Pupulampu-Dove, a high school graduate about entering the medical school advised doctors to look beyond the money they are going to make and focus on saving lives with a compassionate heart.
He advised policy makers to build more medical schools in the country for him and many others who can’t get admission in the few schools in the country due to lack of space to aid in reaching the global goal of attaining 1:5000 doctor-patient ratio in the country.
They were hopeful to attend the next edition of the Forum calling for support from all stakeholders including the general public to add their voices to the initiative by the organizers.
Speakers at the Forum were Dr. Joseph Boateng, a Physician Specialist and Convener of the Forum, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, Cardio-Thoracic Surgeon, Prof. Agyeman Badu Akosa, a pathologist and veteran politician, Dr. Eli Atikpui, Registrar, Medical and Dental Council and Dr. Lydia Dzane-Selby, Director of Claims, NHIS/NHIA.
Others were Dr. Francis Agyemang-Yeboah, Visiting Senior Lecturer, UGMS, Medico-Legal Expert, Dr. Harold Ayetey, Senior Lecturer and Specialist Physician at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital and UCCSMS, Mr. Joseph Kodjo Nsiah Nyoagbe, Registrar, Pharmacy Council, Mr. Samuel Paulos, Founder and Director of Gateway 4 Youth and Dr. Edoardo Peterlini, Team Leader, TRAQUE.
