Accra, Sept. 1, GNA - The 2004 Taekwondo Open Championship ended at the Sports Hall of the Accra Sports Stadium last with 36 Taekwondoist picking medals at the two-day event.
The event, organised by the Ghana Taekwondo Association (GTA), attracted 120 participants with the aim of selecting taekwondoist to form the nucleus of the national team for the African Championship in South Africa next year.
Four participants were picked from each category after the championship and they were presented with brand new uniforms, belts and certificates donated by the South Korean Ambassador to Ghana.
The Ambassador, Professor Sang Chul Lee, who was present at the competition, presented the items and certificates to the winners. After the two-day event, Patrick Kweku, Terrain Asare, Alexander Asare and Richmond Attipoe picked the first four positions in the Flyweight division with Martin Appau, Adom Mensah, Paul Kafui, and Richmond Obeng emerging as the winners in the Bantamweight division. Muniru Mohamed, Augustine Amoah, Charles Annan and Issaka were the winners in another Flyweight division.
In the Lightweight division, Shuaib Yakubu, Eric Cephas Adapoe and Dussey Seth were the winners whilst Steven k. Yeboah, Kofi Kyei, Fatah Alhassan and Lawrence Nyano became the best four in the Middleweight category.
Sadat Mensah, Alhassan Okine, Issifu Mahamadu, and Isaac Kweku Essien won the first four slots in the Featherweight division with David Adjetey Kone, Adnan Meizongo, Zekiyu Quansah dominating in the Welterweight division.
The Heavyweight division saw Augustine Lole, Patrick Ampim, Eugene Saint Omar and Vormador Adams picking the first to fourth positions. In the Women's division, which saw participants weighing 50 kilograms and above, Cynthia Dotse won the first position with Wendolyn Osabu Kudzoe, Anita Nii Quaye and Amina Mohamed following in that order.
Mr Erasmus Adorkor General Secretary of the GTA told the GNA Sports that a similar championship would be organised in December, to select another batch from the participants to embark on a final justifier for the championship in South Africa.
He expressed appreciation to the Korean Ambassador for the donation of prizes to the winners.
