Auction of 4G spectrum collapsed Surfline, other broadband providers – Ursula

Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful attributed the collapse of broadband service providers like Surfline to the 2015 auction of 4G spectrum to mobile networks, particularly MTN.

The auction gave mobile operators an unfair advantage, weakening broadband providers.

The government promised exclusivity to broadband operators but later auctioned 4G spectrum to mobile networks, allowing MTN to corner the market with its financial resources.

This move led to the collapse of local broadband operators, including Surfline and Blue Broadband.

The government is now engaging with broadband operators to explore support options.
