Democracy Hub: Arrest of 53 protesters not politically motivated – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Akufo-Addo has dismissed claims that the arrest of 53 protesters was an attempt to suppress dissent in Ghana.

In an interview with France 24, he emphasized his support for peaceful protests and clarified that the courts, not the executive, handle legal matters.

The protesters were detained after a demonstration against illegal mining (galamsey), which is harming the environment.

Akufo-Addo stressed the importance of peaceful demonstrations and called for collaboration to resolve the galamsey crisis.

He also expressed concern over the instability in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger following military coups and urged regional cooperation to combat extremism.
