Kwaku Asante-Boateng, the MP for Asante Akim South, has revealed that the government's hesitation to impose a total ban on illegal mining, or galamsey, is influenced by fears of electoral losses.
He cited the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) strict stance against galamsey in 2020, which resulted in losing seats in mining communities.
Asante-Boateng suggested that the current government is reluctant to take decisive action due to concerns about voter backlash, a dilemma that could affect any political party facing similar pressures.
