The Majority in Parliament is supporting Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo's proposal to increase Supreme Court judges to 20, citing a high case volume.
Five judges have been recommended to President Akufo-Addo. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) criticized this move as unlawful.
However, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin argues that the proposal is legally sound under Article 125(4) of the constitution, which grants the Chief Justice authority over judiciary administration.
He emphasized that the constitution sets a minimum number of judges but allows for increases to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in handling cases.
