Manasseh Azure Awuni's book, The President Ghana Never Got, unveils that President Akufo-Addo was caught off guard by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s selection of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo) as his running mate.
Akufo-Addo only learned of the choice from the Asantehene, who was informed two months earlier, while Akufo-Addo was still hoping for Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.
The book details that Bawumia had initially preferred Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah but chose Napo due to political strategy.
The news of Napo’s selection was leaked to the media before Akufo-Addo was officially informed, causing tension.
The book also reveals that Bawumia had consulted with former President Kufuor before informing Akufo-Addo, and the Asantehene had better security on the information than Akufo-Addo’s own team.
