Former President John Dramani Mahama has criticized President Akufo-Addo for his remarks about Ghana's independence, specifically rejecting the idea that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was the sole founder.
Akufo-Addo emphasized that the struggle for independence was a collective effort.
Mahama countered, stressing that history clearly shows Nkrumah's pivotal role and accusing the UGCC, to which Akufo-Addo's relatives belonged, of opposing independence.
The debate comes after the 2019 law designating August 4 as Founders' Day and September 21 as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day, a move that sparked controversy among those who believe in Nkrumah's singular role in Ghana's independence.
