The Potty Project, a non-profit organisation founded by some students of the Ghana International School, (GIS), has presented a number of plastic potties and polytanks valued at GH¢26,000 to residents of Chorkor, a suburb of Accra.
The gesture, according to one of the members of the Potty Project, Ms Hailey Awuletey Williams, is to discourage open defecation by providing an alternative for the residents.
The items were received by the assemblyman for the Chorkor Electoral Area, who expressed his appreciation to the group.
Explaining the rationale for the project, another member of the Potty Project, Ms Sania Mirpuri said, the presentation of the four plastic potty and four poly tanks to the community was the first step to its mission of eradicating open defecation in communities in Accra.
“We hope to introduce more facilities like this to help everyone. Also, in the middle of a pandemic, we think that personal hygiene is the best way to fight the Corona Virus", she said.
Ms Rima Baitie, also a member, stated that the project aims at reducing diseases in Ghana caused by the improper disposal of human waste, and “we hope that facilities like this will help achieve our goals”.
