Standard Chartered Bank Ghana PLC has today marked 5 years of its Goal Programme with an impactful Empowerment Forum that enumerated the gains made since its launch in 2017.

The Goal programme teaches girls the critical facts about health, communication, rights, and managing their personal finances in order to help them transform not just their own lives, but those of their families and friends. An additional module to address work readiness as we explore how best to support developing career pathways for girls, alumni, and coaches was introduced in 2018.

The Bank is working with the Nimobi Ladies and students from the Right to Dream Academy as peer coaches to work with beneficiaries in the Eastern and Greater Accra Regions.

The Goal Programme has so far empowered over 10,000 girls with the confidence, knowledge and skills they need to become integral economic leaders in their families and communities.

The programme forms part of ‘Futuremakers by Standard Chartered’, the bank’s global initiative to tackle inequality by promoting greater economic inclusion.

Speaking during the Girls Empowerment Forum which brought together key stakeholders on girl child empowerment, education and sustainability to reflect on how the GOAL programme can be upscaled to bring greater relevance and impact in Ghana, Mansa Nettey, Chief Executive, Standard Chartered Bank PLC Ghana said “As a Bank, we believe that prioritising the well-being of girls and young women has an incredible intergenerational multiplier effect on communities and societies.

Through Goal we have impacted over 10,000 girls providing them with tools to shape their own future and that of their families and communities, thus transforming their lives and lifting participation in our economony.”

On his part, The Minister for Education, Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum commended the GOAL Programme for the significant intervention in prioritizing girls from underprivileged homes. “I am excited that your work at Standard Chartered aligns with the country’s agenda of increasing enrollment of girls to pursue Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics related disciplines to be active contributors to Ghana’s socio-economic transformation.

He encouraged the Goal beneficiaries to take advantage of every opportunity handed to them and not to underestimate themselves and remember that nothing is off limits.”

Marking the 5th anniversary of GOAL in Ghana, Dayo Aderugbo, Head, Corporate Affairs, Brand and Marketing, Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria Limited voiced her gratitude to partners, beneficiaries and all stakeholders that have played a role in the success of the programme over the years. Speaking directly to the beneficiaries she said “I encourage all Goal Girls to take the lessons they have learnt from Goal into their communities and be the best leaders they can be.”

The Empowerment Forum comprised of a panel session where women who have been instrumental in the growth of the GOAL Programme and some of its beneficiaries took turns discussing their experience, learnings and impact.

The GOAL Programme empowers girls in the areas of Financial Education and Literacy, Gender Based Violence and Rights, Confidence and Leadership among others.
