The Kumasi City Market, also known as the New Kejetia Market, has been disconnected from the power grid by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) due to unpaid arrears exceeding GH¢7 million.
Despite a prior agreement to clear the debt, the market's management, led by Edmond Kofi Duffuor, has defaulted on the payment plan, prompting the disconnection.
The market had previously faced a similar situation in April 2024, which was resolved with a payment commitment.
Currently, the market relies on costly generators, and traders are urging the Local Government Ministry to intervene to restore regular electricity supply.
