The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Central Region has raised alarm over increasing transformer vandalism and cable theft, which have disrupted power supply to homes, businesses, and essential services.

From January to October 2024, Kasoa North and South reported 28 cases, the highest in the region, followed by Cape Coast District with six.

The total damage is valued at GHC1,647,381.51, including a recent October incident where Cape Coast lost five transformers worth GHȼ400,000.

Vandals reportedly disconnect transformers from poles, strip copper components, and cut overhead line cables in isolated areas.

General Manager Emmanuel Lumor urged the public to report suspicious activities and form community watch groups.

A GHȼ10,000 reward is offered for information leading to arrests.

This trend mirrors similar issues in countries like Kenya, which has also seen a 46% rise in transformer vandalism.
