Tema youth told not to make trouble during festivals

Mr Isaac Ashai Odamtten, Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, has advised the youth of Tema not to use the Kplejoo Festival celebration to embark on immoral, illegal and violent activities.

Mr Odamtten said as much as the youth are being encouraged to fully participate in such cultural activities, they should not take advantage of the celebration to foment trouble in the area.

He gave the advice when he led officials of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) to present 20 boxes of bottled water, 10 crates of soft drinks, 10 cartons of alcoholic beverages and GH? 10,000.00 to the Tema Traditional Council (TTC) towards the annual festival.

Out of the amount GH? 5,000.00 went to the TTC, GH?2,000.00 to the traditional priests and GH? 3,000.00 to the various asafo groups who would participate in the festival.

Mr Odamtten also encouraged the youth to advertise their culture to their friends from other parts of the country for them to learn about the people of Tema.

He gave the assurance that TMA is putting in measures to promote culture in the Metropolis in other to attract both local and foreign tourists to the harbour city.

He indicated that one of such measures was the Tema MERIFEST, which maiden edition was celebrated in 2014 and pledged to continue to collaborate with the Council for similar cultural programmes.

Nii Adjei Kraku II, Paramount Chief of Tema, who received the items, thanked the Assembly for the gesture and believing in the culture of the natives of Tema.

The people of Tema celebrate two festivals in a year, the Kplejoo and Homowo festivals.

The Klejoo festival which is celebrated to ask for bountiful food and fish as well as to prepare the people for the Homowo festival is observed amidst singing, dancing and merry-making at the Kpletsoshi at Tema Manhean.
