How To Remove Fish Bone In Your Throat Without Injuring Yourself

Tue, 14 Mar 2023 Source: Ghana Trends

It is not uncommon for individuals to inadvertently swallow fish bones when consuming fish. While MedicalNewsToday reports that a fish bone, no matter its size, shape or sharpness, can pass through the digestive system without harm, some individuals may unfortunately choke on fish bones.

Although a stuck fish bone may cause unusual pain, it can also result in significant discomfort and anxiety. Consequently, several tried-and-true methods have been developed to remove fish bones.

If a fish bone becomes lodged in one's throat, swallowing or spitting may be painful, and the individual may even experience bloody vomiting if the bone remains stuck for an extended period of time. Therefore, finding a safe and effective method to remove a fish bone from the throat can be challenging.

One widely-accepted method for easing the pain of a fish bone stuck in the throat is the use of olive oil, which has a well-earned reputation as a natural and reliable lubricant. A teaspoon or two of olive oil can be used to keep the throat moist, whether the individual chooses to swallow or spit out the fish bone.

Another non-invasive method is to soak a piece of bread in water for a minute and then eat it. This softens the bread and makes it easier to chew and swallow a fish bone that has been thickened in this manner.

If the fish bone is lodged near the tonsil, a severe and persistent cough may dislodge it. Eating a banana may also help to alleviate swallowing difficulties, as chewing a whole banana produces a sufficient quantity of saliva, which can help to swallow the fish bone.

Medical professionals recommend offering patients a glass of soda to help them swallow a fish bone that has become stuck in the throat. Carbonated drinks can raise abdominal pressure due to the gas formation during digestion, which makes it easier to expel the fish bone from the airway.

If all other treatments have failed, surgery may be necessary to remove the fish bone. If an individual has a deeper neck, gullet or another part of the digestive system, such treatment may be dangerous, and immediate medical attention is necessary. If an individual experiences difficulty breathing, excessive sweating, or chest pain, they should seek emergency medical attention.
