An 18-year-old woman was discovered sitting down on Champion Street in Verulam, KZN, and she claimed to have been raped after escaping from the hospital.
The adolescent told the locals about the incident, and they phoned Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) at around 14:53 this afternoon (Tuesday).
The female was examined by the reaction officers when they arrived and she revealed that she had been confined to the Osindisweni Government Hospital for a week due to a medical ailment.
She went on to say that she had left the hospital unannounced the previous night (Monday).
She allegedly encountered an elderly man who took her to his house and raped her there. She left his house this morning and has since been wandering the streets. She had a bag filled with clothing from the East.
The woman was unable to give her family's contact information. When reaction officers approached Osindisweni Government Hospital, they were told that they were unaware of a female patient who had either self-discharged or escaped the previous evening.
Soon after, the Verulam SAPS arrived and confirmed that the female was a psychiatric patient who had been yesterday admitted by the police to Osindisweni Government Hospital.
