In 2008, Kibera resident James Mwangi was a hardworking man with a small business selling second-hand clothes. He had a loving wife and two children, and life was good. However, everything changed when his wife, Jane, started to borrow money from loan sharks to fund her lavish lifestyle.
Jane would buy expensive clothes and jewelry and take trips with her friends, while James struggled to pay off her debts. When he refused to give her any more money, Jane started to physically and emotionally abuse him. She would scream at him in public and even hit him in front of their children.
As James struggled to pay off the mounting debts, he was forced to close his business, and the family had to move to a small, cramped apartment. He lost all his friends and was constantly ridiculed by his neighbors.
