Speaking at the launch of “Private School Teacher Continuous Professional Development” (PSTCPD), programme on Monday, February 21, 2022, Dr. Addai-Poku revealed that there are thirty percent (30%) of unprofessional teachers working in both Private and Public Schools in Ghana.
He added that, out of the 30 percent, 14,000 of them are in the Public Schools whereas the majority teach in the Private Schools.
Dr. Christian Addai-Poku, the Registrar of the “National Teaching Council” (NTC) disclosed that 70 percent of Private School teachers in Ghana are not professionals enough. Thus, they do not qualify to teach.
During The programme, NTC Boss added, he aimed at ensuring that only teachers with the requisite skills and qualifications are allowed to teach which is the mandate NTC is carrying out to the end of the year.
For more details, he noted the unqualified teachers, are graduates from the Junior High School, Senior High Schools and even Universities.
-NTC and GNACOPS to Organize a Training
The “National Teaching Council” with the “Ghana National Council of Private Schools” (GNACOPS) to organize training to over 2000 unqualified teachers to equip them with the best practices on how to teach literacy and numeracy.
In this perspective, Dr. Addai-Poku made this statement; “Over the year, our education system has leveraged the readiness and availability of non-professional teachers to deliver education in the country and the government is working hard to close the gap of qualified teachers in both private and public school.”

As part of the requirement to ensure private teachers are trained, NTC Boss concluded by saying; “I will urge all qualified teachers, especially in all the private schools to apply for the teachers’ license currently going on throughout the country to do so because by law, it is the only authorisation to teach currently in Ghana.”
