Even Teachers Who Take GH¢2,000 Can’t Survive with Their Family in This Hard Times- Mr. Adokwei (CCT-GH)

Many years back teachers used to take pride in teaching because they were accorded respect in Ghanaian society. Parents visited us with gifts of all kinds of foodstuffs, such as eggs, fish, yams, and even money. Teachers were contacted for advice on social and political issues. In short teachers played the role of effective opinion leaders.

These days, the teacher has been pushed off his former position of glory. The erosion of respect for the teaching profession has made a lot of them lose interest in teaching including the upcoming teachers.

There is no motivation for teachers at the moment in our society. The only thing you hear daily is "he/she is just a mere teacher", which indicates that no one thinks highly of teachers in our society again.

In the midst of these mounting problems, teacher’s salary and working condition seem to be ignored.

In the same perspective, the Communication Officer of the Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana (CCT-GH), Adokwei Ayikwi-Awulley has lamented the woes of Ghanaian teacher in this current hardship being endured by all Ghanaians in this post covid-19 era.

According to Mr. Adokwei, things have become hard for the ordinary teacher because of insufficient salary coupled with poor working conditions.

Speaking on TV New Day Show on TV3 monitored closely by Frencheducationgh.com, the CCT-GH communication officer stressed “just imagine a teacher or nurse who is married, having just two children. I know teachers who are taking GH¢1,700, GH¢1,600. Let's take it that you're taking GH¢2,000. I don't think somebody can tell me that such a person can survive in this era.”

However, he explained further to this effect that currently price of fresh tomatoes on the market are selling at 2/3 pieces for GH¢5.

In addition, the high cost of electricity, water, rent and others have indeed become a big impediment to public sector workers with their stagnant salary.

To conclude this, Mr. Ayikwi-Awulley called on the Government of President Akufo-Addo to pay the 20% of worker’s salary as Cost of Living Allowance (Cola) which is being pushed by the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to cushion public sector workers during this hard times.
