FIFA World Cup 2022 In Qatar: Who Should Coach Black Stars? Otto Addo or Chris Houghton?

Thu, 14 Apr 2022 Source: Michael Djan

The vacant coaching role needed to be filled for the world cup playoffs against the Super Eagles of Nigeria. Thankfully, Ghana defied all odds at the World Cup Playoff and qualified at the expense of Nigeria in Abuja.

Currently, Ghana is without a head coach following last month’s World Cup qualifying play-offs against Nigeria.

The four-member technical team which included: Chris Houghton (Technical Advisor) Otto Addo (Head coach), George Boateng (Assistant Coach) and Mas-Ud Didi Dramani (Assistant coach) did an incredible job.

Coach Otto Addo

Coach Otto Addo received a lot of praise after that stellar performance and many think he should lead the team to the world cup in Qatar. At the moment, Otto is working as an assistant coach with Borussia Dortmund. Will he take a full time job as the Black Stars coach? I’m sure it is something he has been thinking about.

Chris Houghton

Chris Houghton is considered as an experienced coach, having trained a lot of players in the English Premiership. He has coached Newcastle United, Norwich City and Brighton & Hove Albion. Currently, he has no job and it seems he will also be a good fit for the role.

Mr. Henry Asante Twum is the Head of Communications of the Ghana Football Association (GFA). In an interview with Luv FM, he said; “I do not think it will take much time [for an announcement on Ghana’s coaching situation to be made].”

“They [GFA] are in communication with the individuals concerned, having regular discussions with their employers, and many factors are being considered.

“But, again, the Government of Ghana is the employer of the coach of the Black Stars and here is the case where we had four coaches qualifying us for the World Cup.”

Ghanaians are anxiously waiting for the news for the person who takes over the role as a substantive coach.

Mr. Asante Twum disclosed; “In terms of contractual engagement, a lot will go into it, so it’s tough to discuss these things, so, engagements are still ongoing, and I’m sure we will communicate our position as soon as a decision is made.”

“The president said we should consider taking the four coaches to the World Cup, and this is a very important request he made,” Asante Twum added.

Ghana have been grouped with Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea for the World Cup which runs from November 21 to December 18 in Qatar.

Let me know your thoughts on who becomes the next coach of the Black Stars.
