Public Relation Officer (PRO) for Ghana Education Service, Prof Kwasi Kwateng has said the government is still working with stakeholders and the leaders of teacher unions to address their concern.
According to him the teachers strike has really affected education. When it comes to the topics in the new curriculum, teachers have not completed them and soon they would have a vacation. This has created a major challenge to them especially the final year students in both Junior High Schools and Senior High Schools.
He assured that, the government is on negotiations with the leaders of the teacher unions to address their concern so that there will be no other unions to join. "government is putting measures in place to address the 20% cost of living allowance (COLA) to the teachers which has influenced by high inflation, increment of fuel prices and increment of food and goods in the country", he said.
He entreats Ghanaians to hold on to their faith because the Ministry of Employment Labour and Relations have a meeting with the leaders of the teacher unions and soon their demands will be address so that they can go back to the classrooms to teach.
Four teacher unions which are the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana and Teacher and Educational Workers Union(TEWU) declared a nationwide indefinite strike with immediate effect following the government failure to pay their cost of living allowance (COLA) they demanded for.
