Education Minister and Bosomtwe Member of Parliament, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum says plans are far advanced for the central government to upgrade 50 to 100-year-old public Colleges of Education to fully-fledged university status.
He after the leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) paid a courtesy call on him said the move is to allow the Colleges to run their courses and operate on their own and not as affiliate institutions.
“After operating for between 50 and 100 years, why must such Colleges continue to be affiliated to other universities when they qualify to be autonomous,” the Minister in charge of Education told members of the teacher union.
Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum Monday told the GNAT leadership a document on the upgrade of the public Colleges of Education (CoE) had been submitted to the cabinet for review and approval before the necessary actions and process.
Commending the teachers for their enormous contribution to the education sector, the Minister for Education disclosed a teachers’ welfare desk has been established in his office to address the concerns of Government teachers.
“As a matter of fact, my focus is to ensure that teachers get the nest of support in capacity building as well as enhancing their welfare, so I have set up a teachers welfare desk in my office to address your concerns,” he told GNAT.
In a related development, the Ministry of Education (MoE) in the first week of March this year will launch a teacher welfare portal to receive concerns submitted by government school teachers in the country for redress.
Speaking on PeaceFM’s Kokrokoo show monitored by EducationWeb, the Education Minister said his outfit is tirelessly working on the soon to be launched website to ensure submitted complaints to the Ministry are addressed directly.
“The website is almost ready, that is teacher welfare portal for anybody with a problem related to teaching to submit concerns for the Ministry of Education and Ghana Education Service to address them,” he told host of Kokrokoo show.
The Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe Constituency said his outfit after the launch of the teach welfare portal will assign case managers who will handle the reported or submitted issues to make sure that the cases are resolved.
