Landlords Will Stop Taking Two Years Rent Advance If One or Two of Them Are Arrested – John Dumelo

Mon, 13 Jun 2022 Source: Michael Djan

John Dumelo is a Ghanaian actor, farmer and politician. On 1 April 2014 he emerged as the first Ghanaian to hit a million likes on Facebook. His parents are Mr. John Dumelo who was a Civil Engineer and Mrs. Antoinette Dumelo a Customs Officer.

In a new post sighted by Zionfelix.net, the actor cum politician stated that authorities should apply force in solving this challenge.

He said if some landlords who take two years’ rent advance are arrested, the rest will stop.

John Dumelo tweeted: “If one or two landlords are arrested for demanding 2 years rent advance, the rest will stop!”

Per the rent act, landlords are not supposed to take more than six months’ rent advance.

So, my question is, if the landlord is forced with the law to take 6 months or less rent advance, in case the landlord decides not to rent out again, in this case who suffers? The law enforcers, the landlord or the one desperately looking for a shelter?

The Rent Act of Ghana (Act 220) was established in 1963 and was mandated by the Rent Control Division, as the body in charge of monitoring and establishing guidelines to manage the tenant-landlord relationship. There are also rent control laws in Ghana to regulate the eviction of tenants by landlords. This Act procures the tenant a period of time to search for accommodation while he/she is being evicted; this is normally three months.

If you have any issues with your landlord and you need help, the best option is to speak to Rent Control Ghana. This authority is responsible for handling disagreements between tenants, landlords and any other individuals interested in a particular property and will be able to provide further advice in any difficult situations.
