Summary of The Finance Minister’s Press Statement On 24th March, 2022

The Finance Minister Hon. Ken Ofori Atta issued a press statement on 24th March,2022 while announcing measures introduced to deal with the economic challenges in the country.

Fuel to Be Reduced

Hon. Ken Ofori Atta revealed that; Government intends to reduce fuel prices by 15 pesewas per litre. Government looks to making total expenditure savings of 3.5billion cedis.50 percent cut on allocation of fuel coupons for all Government employees.

Government to Cut Down Other Expenses

Government looks to reduce or cut on all foreign travels for all Government employees. Government will also cut 50 percent on expenses on meetings and conferences.30 percent cut in the salaries of all ministers and Government appointees. Government to bring in 2 billion to support economy.

He continued that Government will conclude the renegotiation of the Energy Sector IPPs capacity charges by the end of the Q3-2022 to further reduce excess capacity payments by 20 percent to generate a total savings of Ghs 1.5billion.

Government to Remove All Ghost Workers

“Government will conclude on-going measures to eliminate “ghost” workers from the Government payroll by end December 2022.

Purchase of Imported Vehicles Imposed

The Finance Minister further stated that with immediate effect, the Government has imposed a complete moratorium on the purchase of imported vehicles for the rest of the year.

He said this will affect all new orders, especially 4-wheel drives.

He said; “With immediate effect, Government has imposed a complete moratorium on the purchase of imported vehicles for the rest of the year. This will affect all new orders, especially 4-wheel drives. We will ensure that the overall effect is to reduce total vehicle purchases by the public sector by at least 50 percent for the period.”

E-Levy to Be Passed by The End of March 2022

He concluded that “if you pray with me I am sure by the end of March we will pass E-levy in parliament. So let us be hopeful about it. This part really caught the attention of many Ghanaians since they do not want the E-levy to be passed.
