The High Number of Unemployment in Ghana Is Due to The Poor Educational System Structure- Alan Kyerematen

In Ghana, the unemployment rate is too high whilst the job opportunities available on the market are few.

Speaking at the 112th Speech, Prize-Giving, and Founder’s Day Celebrations of Adisadel College in Cape Coast, monitored by Eric Sekyi/ATLFMNEWS, he stated that there is a need to take pragmatic steps to properly structure the education system to curb the high rising unemployment rate.

Minister for Trade and Industries, Mr. Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen has called for a concerted effort by all stakeholders in the education sector and Ghanaians to contribute their quota to help change the fortunes of Ghana’s education.

According to him, the framework of the country’s educational system does not reflect its development priorities leading to the continuous rise in the number of unemployed graduates in the country.

This, he said, poses a major security challenge in Ghana largely due to the nature of its educational system.

He noted “While several factors may account for this very unfortunate situation, the major part of this problem has to do with the mismatch between the nature and structure of our educational system…we need an urgent change in direction if we are to be counted among the developed nations in this world.”

The Honorable Minister, urged students to channel all their efforts in studying hard and to be devoted to their books so that they can succeed in their quest to become great individuals not only in Ghana but internationally.

Additionally, in order to curb the menace or minimize the impact of unemployment in Ghana, first of all, our educational system needs to be transformed to adapt to the current trends of employment on the global market. Thanks to the invention of Information Technology (IT), we are now living in a global village.

The Educational System Must Be Changed

A number one contributing factor to the high unemployment rate in Ghana is the kind of educational system we decided to adopt. Most people are unemployed because they have in one way or another pursued programmes that do not match their skills and have any employment avenues. And surprisingly, these programmes have dominated the educational system for long.

So, as Mr. Minister of trade and Industries, Mr. Alan Kyerematen said, we’re appealing all stakeholders in the education sector and Ghanaians in general to voice out to have our Curriculum and our Universities’ programmed changed to benefit our children, our future leaders.

Finally, to the young Ghanaians, not all programmes in the university are readable especially if you want to get employed in Ghana and beyond. Look at the trend of the world and pursue appropriate programmes.
